What is the Just 1 More Mile Challenge?
My friend Lloyd Thomas told me about the Just 1 More Mile Challenge halfway through it back in November of 2008.
As you’ve already read elsewhere on this site, the concept is relatively simple. You run 1 mile on the 1st of the month, and then add 1 more mile every day so that you are running 2 miles on the 2nd, 3 miles on the 3rd, etc.
It cost each runner $20 to enter, with 50% of the entry fees going to the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the other 50% going towards the charity of the “winning” runner’s choice. Since Erik Barr actually made it all the way to the end of the competition, the prize pool was doubled by the race organizer so that the full amount went to both charities.
When I found out about the challenge, I got excited and wanted to take part. The challenge didn’t happen this past November, however, and was supposed to take place this January.
Unfortunately, the official challenge wasn’t able to start this month either, but I am going ahead and running it anyway on my own. Hopefully it will happen sometime later in the year, and hopefully they choose a shorter month!
Whether the official challenge continues or not, though, I plan on making the most of what I have available and will run not only the 490 miles projected by the official mileage, but plan on topping 500 miles.

Hi Blaine
It is great that you are doing this fundraiser for Camp Sunshine. Good luck on reaching your goals. Is your money goal $150,000 and have you raised $16,000 already? I ask because this is an awful lot for one person to raise. I will be watching your progress.
Have a great New Year, Mike
ps great way to start off the year.

Mike -
The donate button goes directly to the payment page at Camp Sunshine. My personal goal is $4500 (enough for 3 families to attend the camp.) The amount shown on that page is the overall goal for Camp Sunshine for the season.
If I could raise $150,000 I would be very impressed…but I think that that might be out of my range, heheh!
