Day #03 – Snowshoeing at Black Brook

I started the day the best way I know how, with a great breakfast. I scrambled up some eggs with baby bellas, white and red onion, some bacon, and some seasonings, served it along with half a bagel…

And then spent the next 3 hours shoveling my driveway. Looking out it seemed to be about the same amount of snow as yesterday, but it was much heavier and took a long time to clear.

In fact, just after my hike down the road to shovel out the nearest fire hydrant, our friend Christine pulled in to go snowshoeing with us. I took a quick trip into the house to eat a banana and a ProGrade Craver granola bar, and then headed right back out.

We packed the snowshoes into the car and headed over to the Black Brook Preserve where we proceeded to spend the next hour or two hiking about in the woods. Some of the bridges were a bit too narrow to easily be able to go over them in snowshoes, but I did my best to knock the snow off them for the ladies.

We did the full perimeter loop, then took the interior Pine Grove trail out towards the far side of the trail system and took the diamond loop back. I forgot my watch, but since I ran all of the trails last week to measure them I was able to estimate that I ran a bit over 3.33 miles. Combined with the ¼ mile hike to the hydrant, I’m estimating today at a conservative 3½ miles total.

I was a bit soaked by the time I got home, since it was snowing constantly the entire day. My wife had some soup going in the crock pot for after the hike, though, which did a great job of warming me up. It went great with today’s loaf of bread. (We bake a fresh loaf of bread almost every morning.)

I finished the day off with another half an hour of shoveling out our driveway. Better to get the couple inches while the sun was still up than to have to move it tomorrow morning; I’m hoping that it doesn’t accumulate too much more than that over night so I can get the car shoveled out first thing and get to work on time.

Here are today’s numbers:

Miles Projected: 3 Miles (6 Miles Total)
Miles Run: 3½ Miles (11.8 Miles Total)
Duration: 2 Hours (3:04:56 Total)
Net Weight Change: -1½ Pounds (0 Pounds Total)
