It’s been 2 years since the 1 More Mile for Sunshine challenge ended.

I didn’t make it through day 25 last time, but my friends rallied around me on the 31st to get the missing miles in and I was able to end on a high note and raise enough money for a family to attend Camp Sunshine.

Now that I’m full time with Run to Win, I’m better able to get my running in during daylight hours when there is less traffic and safer conditions.

Seems like a good time to start it again, doesn’t it?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGX2jU8KhDQ

Beginning on March 1 and running through March 31, I will be running the challenge again and I’d like for you to join me. Here’s how you can help:

Update: The 1 More Mile Challenge is being run for a second time in the month of March 2012! Here’s the original details from 2010:

This website details my progress throughout the month for the 1 More Mile for Sunshine Challenge. Starting on January 1st, I’ll be running at least 1 mile, followed by at least 2 miles on the 2nd, all the way up through 31 miles on the 31st as I raise money for Camp Sunshine.

This feat will be a whole new experience for me, because while the month starts out easily enough the miles really start to add up after a week and a half or so.

All of the day’s allotted miles need to be run on the day in question (going from Eastern Standard Time, where I live) although they don’t all need to be run in the course of a single run. Any measured pedestrian pursuit on my part is going to be counted, including running, hiking, and snowshoeing.

I was introduced to Camp Sunshine by my friend, Mike Brooks, who has raised tens of thousands of dollars for them over the years.

Most recently, Mike raised over $10,000 by trying to run 500 miles in 10 days. I’m not quite ready to tackle something like that, so I’m going to spread my 500 mile attempt over 31 days. (Not that his attempt really has anything to do with my attempt, other than as an inspiration and introduction to Camp Sunshine for me.)

Camp Sunshine is the ideal organization for me to raise money for. They have a great mission, they have a national reach, they are located local to me, and the primary beneficiary of their service are children.

Here is more about them straight from the Camp Sunshine website:

SUPPORTING CHILDREN WITH LIFE THREATENING ILLNESSES & THEIR FAMILIES

Camp Sunshine supports children with life threatening illnesses and their families. The camp has the distinction of being the only program in the nation whose mission is to address the impact of a life threatening illness on every member of the immediate family—the ill child, the parents, and the siblings. Since its inception, Camp Sunshine has provided a haven for over 30,000 individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Families with a child diagnosed with diseases such as cancer, kidney disease, lupus, solid organ transplants, and other life threatening illnesses attend one of the week-long camps. Our focus is on alleviating the strain that a life threatening illness takes not only on the sick child but also on other family members. Families have an opportunity to rebuild their relationships together and meet other families facing similar challenges.

Free quality services are provided at the camp including accommodations and meals, onsite medical services, counseling services, and recreational facilities. While the camp is in session, each family stays in their own family suite. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served each day.

Volunteers, except for those who live nearby, also stay on the property. Camp Sunshine is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, many of whom return year after year. The volunteers reflect the diversity of the families and help with recreational leadership, childcare, food service and whatever else needs to be done.

Another distinctive component of the program is the medical facilities and professional staff that are available to address the taxing physical needs of children with intrusive diseases. A physician is located at the camp for the entire session so that families can be secure in the knowledge that the camp offers 24-hour onsite medical support. In addition, a hospital with full-time emergency room physicians and pediatricians is only 25 minutes from the camp.

Recreational hours allow children to relax and enjoy the simple pleasures of childhood while their parents find quiet moments to walk by the lake and reaffirm their support for one another. In addition, games and events are designed to foster family involvement, encouraging families to laugh and play as a unit. This approach builds a new foundation the family can take with them when the camp is over to unite them during the darker times they will face.

Each family is sponsored by an individual, civic group, corporation, or foundation, which enables a family to spend a week at Camp Sunshine free of charge. The sponsorship for one family to participate in the week-long program is $1,500. The Family Sponsorship Program provides a way for donors to sponsor a family or families from their geographic area.

A retreat for children with life threatening illnesses and their families.

The Camp Sunshine Program is FREE.

The official Just 1 More Mile Challenge started out as a small fundraiser. It cost each runner $20 to enter, with 50% of the entry fees going to the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the other 50% going towards the charity of the "winning" runner’s choice. Since Erik Barr actually made it all the way to the end of the competition, the prize pool was doubled by the race organizer so that the full amount went to both charities.
What is the Just 1 More Mile Challenge? is an update from the 1 More Mile for Sunshine Challenge - Please visit the site for extra content that may not appear here such as video updates.

My friend Lloyd Thomas told me about the Just 1 More Mile Challenge halfway through it back in November of 2008.

As you’ve already read elsewhere on this site, the concept is relatively simple. You run 1 mile on the 1st of the month, and then add 1 more mile every day so that you are running 2 miles on the 2nd, 3 miles on the 3rd, etc.

It cost each runner $20 to enter, with 50% of the entry fees going to the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the other 50% going towards the charity of the “winning” runner’s choice. Since Erik Barr actually made it all the way to the end of the competition, the prize pool was doubled by the race organizer so that the full amount went to both charities.

When I found out about the challenge, I got excited and wanted to take part. The challenge didn’t happen this past November, however, and was supposed to take place this January.

Unfortunately, the official challenge wasn’t able to start this month either, but I am going ahead and running it anyway on my own. Hopefully it will happen sometime later in the year, and hopefully they choose a shorter month!

Whether the official challenge continues or not, though, I plan on making the most of what I have available and will run not only the 490 miles projected by the official mileage, but plan on topping 500 miles.
